![]() 2022/03/24 Cybersecurity and Telehealth – What medical practices need to know
We live in a time where one computer user clicking on one link within an email or while visiting a website can lead to a catastrophic compromise of information systems and data. Regardless of size, any organization with an Internet presence is at risk! There has been a sharp increase in cyber-attacks: hacking, phishing, ransomware, and other malicious software.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) were originally written almost 24 years ago when many of the technologies and cyber issues we are dealing with today didn’t even exist! Therefore, being “HIPAA compliant” doesn’t mean much these days.
Add telehealth to mix … and ensuring risks are being managed appropriately needs be at the forefront for medical practices.

![]() 2022/03/22 Cybersecurity Updates and Best Practices for Emergency Cyber Preparedness
Cyber-attacks to healthcare organizations are on the rise. Ransomware attacks have caused hospitals to implement their emergency management plans and in some cases, divert patients to other hospitals. Organizations that are prepared with a measured and practiced incident response capability have the best possible means to address and quickly recover from an attack. A tabletop exercise that includes multidisciplinary staff ensures greater response success in the event of a real cyber-attack.

During the global pandemic, the use of telehealth grew exponentially as hospitals adopted virtual ways for patients to get the help they need from the comfort of their home. Now as we see the tail-end of the pandemic, organizations look to invest more on telehealth and remote care in order to reach more of their patient population. In this session, we explore the security challenges hospitals face and how they can protect their network from new technologies entering their system.

"Stretching a Shoestring Budget: Security Best Practices for Small Providers" Tom Walsh, CISSP, tw-Security Founder and Managing Partner, moderator. When it comes to cybersecurity best practices, it’s only natural that a disconnect sometimes exists between what goes on at Penn Medicine, Intermountain Healthcare, and other large health systems, and, say, a 25-bed critical access hospital in rural Kansas. Small healthcare providers have fewer resources than the industry heavyweights, but no less risk of cyberattacks.
This session addresses the security challenges of smaller healthcare providers head-on. The all-star speakers include an industry consultant with years of experience working with small and mid-size organizations, the IT director and security officer for a 25-bed medical center, and the co-lead of HHS’s Health Industry Cybersecurity Best Practice for small, medium and large organizations.
